HP to buy 3Com for $2.7B

3Com Corp., the company that gave birth to Ethernet, has agreed to be acquired by Hewlett Packard Co. for a total of approximately $2.7 billion in cash, in a deal that already has approval from the boards of both companies.

IntAct Labs snags top Ignite Clean Energy prize

IntAct Labs LLC, a team of MIT scientists looking to generate electricity from cleaning wastewater, are the winners of the 2009 Ignite Clean Energy prize. The venture receives $35,000 in cash, legal services, incubation space in the Advanced Materials Technology Center at UMass Dartmouth and real estate consulting.

Beacon Power preps N.Y. energy plant construction

Beacon Power Corp. plans to begin construction November 23 on its 20-megawatt energy storage plant planned in rural Rensselaer County, N.Y. The $69 million plant would operate with 10 pods of 20 flywheels each and store energy from the electric grid.

Metabolix makes $27M public offering

Cambridge bioscience company Metabolix Inc. has announced a public offering that could bring in about $27 million for the company. Expected to close Nov. 16, 2009, the offering of three million shares of company stock is priced at $9 per share.

Aponos wins WPI Venture Forum Business Plan Contest

Aponos Medical Corp. of Kingston, N.H., walked away with $20,000 and bragging rights as the winner of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Venture Forum 16th Annual Business Plan Contest last night in Worcester.

    High Tech All-Stars Celebrate the Mass High Tech All Stars

    Each year, Mass High Tech honors the New England tech industry’s pioneers and leaders from such sectors as: Advanced Energy, Biotech, Electronics, Hardware, Internet, Medical Devices, Software and Telecommunications. We also recognize those in support services who make it possible for entrepreneurship to thrive in the region, including lawyers, financiers, educators, public policy makers and association representatives.

    Almost 400 members of the innovation community gathered at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel to honor the 2009 MHT All-Stars. You can read the profiles of the 15 honorees and past recipients, and learn more about the awards reception.

    Now it’s time to look ahead to 2010, and the 15th Annual MHT All-Stars program.
